The Registration Certificate, or RC, is the document your Regional Transport Office (RTO) issues when a vehicle is registered. It is the official proof that the vehicle is registered in India and records who owns it.
You need a valid RC to drive the vehicle on public roads, renew insurance, transfer ownership and sell it. Private vehicles are registered for 15 years at a time, after which the registration has to be renewed.
Checking vehicle details online shows the same information the RTO holds, without asking the owner for the paper copy.
Confirm the number of owners, that the RC is active, and whether a loan is still recorded, before you pay.
Match the make, model, colour and fuel type on the RC with the vehicle in front of you. A mismatch is a reason to walk away.

Check the registration and road tax are in order before the ownership transfer at the RTO.
See when insurance, PUC, fitness and registration run out, and renew before a fine.
Unpaid challans stay with the vehicle. Check and pay them online before you buy or sell.
The government's own services show these details too. MotoInfo puts them in one report with renewal dates and a health score.
